he East Kalimantan provincial government will inaugurate the Maratua airport in the Berau regency in June 2015 in an effort to support marine tourism development in the Derawan Islands.
The head of the East Kalimantan transportation office, H Zairin Zain, said in Samarinda on Thursday that the construction of the Maratua airport, which has a 1,400-meter runway, cost around Rp 92 billion (US$7 million).
"The airport is expected to facilitate the inflow of local and foreign tourists to the island, which has a number of very interesting attractions, especially the underwater world," he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The airport can also be utilized to function as an outer layer of defense to safeguard the sovereignty of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) because East Kalimantan has many outer islands, he said. (hhr)
