ational Mandate Party (PAN) chairman Zulkifli Hasan says that his party is still examining a plan to revise the laws on local elections as well as on political parties, which would be needed to allow the Golkar Party and the United Development Party (PPP) to participate in elections in December.
"Law revision, including of both these laws [Law No. 8/2015 on local elections and Law No. 2/2011 on political parties] is normal, but we cannot decide yet if it's time do it," Zulkifli said on the sidelines of PAN's national working meeting in Jakarta on Thursday.
The House of Representatives is expected to deliberate on the amendment of both laws as soon as it resumes sitting on May 18. A decision must be made on whether to provide legal support for Golkar and PPP to nominate candidates to contest the 269 elections that would take place simultaneously if both parties fail to settle their infighting.
A failure to revise the laws will exclude Golkar and the PPP from the competition because a regulation by the General Elections Commission (KPU) on the local elections has so far required a provision of a final and binding court verdict or a peace pact in order for both parties to take part in the election.
The amendments of the election law and the party law is expected to allow infighting parties to submit the latest court ruling over their leadership battles to the KPU.
Golkar and the PPP are currently waiting for verdicts by the Jakarta Administrative Court (PTUN) over the control of their respective parties. (hhr)
