P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is set to give clemency to five political detainees in a Jayapura, Papua, on Saturday, said Coordinating Legal, Politics and Security Affairs Minister Tedjo Edhy Purdjiatno.

Jokowi is currently on a visit of several areas in Papua, including the Abepura Prison in Jayapura.

According to Tedjo, six political prisoners had requested clemency, but one has died.

"Today, [the five political prisoners] will be released," Tedjo said in Jayapura, claiming to not know who the persons were.

The Law and Human Rights Ministry's Papua office has yet to reveal the names, but Latifa Anum Siregar, the lawyer representing the five individuals, said they were all convicted of breaking into a military compound in Wamena, Papua, in 2003.

The five convicted in that case are Apotnalogolit Lokobal, who is serving 20-year sentence, Numbungga Telenggen, who is serving a life sentence, Kimanus Wenda, serving 19 years, Linus Hiluka, serving 19 years, and Jefrai Murib, serving a life sentence.

The five were previously imprisoned in different prisons, including in Nabire Prison and Biak Prison.

"I appreciate and thank [the President] for making a good move in terms of democracy. And [I] hope that the President will grant more clemency for other political detainees," Latifa said.

Moreover, Tedjo revealed there is a plan to grant amnesty to other political prisoners. (++++)
