A

t least 4,000 students gathered in the European Union (EU)-Indonesia Scholarships Info Day event, featuring scholarships from at least 10 EU countries and Indonesia, on Saturday.

The mostly graduate and postgraduate scholarships offered had attracted Indonesian in pursuit of the scholarships in EU countries, which in 2013 saw at least 4,000 Indonesian studying in Europe.

The crowd has gathered in the venue in Grand Sahid Jaya hotel, Central Jakarta, as early as 6 a.m. and quickly filled the hall with the capacity of 400.

Among them was Muhamad Andrian, 23, who came to collect information on the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) and Erasmus Plus.

"I want to study communication in Lund University in Sweden funded by LPDP scholarship. I just think Sweden is a conducive place to study, and the university seems to have great facilities," the broadcasting bachelor graduate said, adding that he was also interested in universities in Amsterdam and UK for the Erasmus scholarship.

He said that he had been preparing the documents to apply for both scholarships, which included recommendation letters and essay, among others.

However, Andrian admitted that he had been struggling with his TOEFL score that had not reached the 550 required score.

"So now I'm studying in English village in Kediri, East Java, to improve my English. There are other scholarship hunters there too," he said.

Meanwhile, Joan, 23, a second year university student, said that he had been a frequent visitor to scholarship events since last year to gather information.

"I want to have experience in studying abroad. Not to play down Indonesian education, but there might be more to offer there," he said, adding that he's interested to enroll in English graduate program in Manchester University, England.

It is estimated that least 7,000 Indonesian students are studying in European countries this year. (fsu) (++++)
