hinese nationals arrested in North Jakarta recently were paid Rp 4 million (US$303) per month to run a cybercrime operation from Indonesia, an officer said on Wednesday.
Jakarta Police criminal investigation director Sr. Comr Heru Pranoto said they were brought to Jakarta to extort state officials in China.
"During our preliminary investigation, they admitted each of them were paid Rp 4 million a month to extort money. We will investigate the case further," he said, adding there was also a coordinator who received higher payments.
Police arrested 30 Chinese and Taiwanese citizens hiding out at a shophouse in Pantai Indah Kapuk on Tuesday.
Heru said police would coordinate with the counterparts in China and other Chinese-speaking countries in the near future, as he predicted there were more people involved in the crime.
The Chinese and Taiwanese citizens entered Indonesia on a tourist visa. On May 6, police also arrested 33 Chinese citizens operating cybercrime in a luxurious house in South Jakarta. (++++)
