P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo will issue a presidential regulation requiring rehabilitation for drug users, says National Narcotics Agency (BNN) head Comr. Gen. Anang Iskandar.

'€œIn the near future, a presidential regulation will be issued to regulate the handling of drug users. The President ordered all officials attending a recent cabinet meeting to make adjustments to the standard regulation on drug users,'€ he said in a discussion on narcotics in Cikini, Central Jakarta, on Saturday.

He said the President has instructed relevant institutions to treat drug users and drug dealers or traffickers differently.

All state institutions, including the National Police, have been ordered to give protection, education and rehabilitation to drug users.

According to Anang, imprisoning drug users would not solve the problem, and the current condition in prisons had failed to prevent drug users from using drugs.

So, law enforcers, in particular police, prosecutors and judges, are asked not to give jail sentences to drug users, he said.

He said, however, that harsh sanctions should be imposed on drug dealers and traffickers.

'€œThe law has mandated rehabilitation for drug users. But drug dealers must be given harsh sanctions and their assets must be confiscated,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com. (rms)(++++)
