tate oil and gas company Pertamina is carrying out research to develop water-mixable fuel as a part of its effort to develop new and renewable energy sources, an official has said.

'€œIts name is diesel emulsion. It is diesel fuel with water mixed in. The key element to facilitate mixing between diesel and water is a chemical compound called surfactant,'€ Pertamina'€™s research and development vice president Eko Wahyu Laksono said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the new fuel would be more environmentally friendly compared with conventional diesel. '€œOne of its advantages is its soot is not black and dirty. The conventional diesel has opacity of more than 15 while the diesel emulsion'€™s opacity is less than 10. It'€™s low emission,'€ Eko said.

He further explained that Pertamina could produce micro and macro diesel emulsion products. The micro diesel emulsion development had entered its trial stage, currently conducted at the Industrial Research Affiliation Institute (LAPI) at Bandung Institute of Technology. During the test, the micro diesel emulsion was used as fuel for vehicles that ran for around 10,000 kilometers.

'€œMany developed countries have used macro diesel emulsion as fuel,'€ said Eko.

He said Pertamina was targeting to distribute the diesel emulsion to its consumers in the public transportation and fishing sectors.

'€œIf it can pass a hi-speed engine tests, certainly it can also be used in mid-low engine vehicles such as those used for public transportation and fishing boats,'€ said Eko. (ebf)(+++)
