P

eople traveling by car or public transportation to their workplaces in the city on Wednesday could encounter major traffic jams on main streets leading to the Presidential Palace and the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, as thousands of people are expected to hit the streets to observe National Awakening Day.

Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Unggung Tjahyono said on Tuesday that more than 7,600 personnel from the Jakarta Police, the Jakarta Military and the city administration would be deployed to maintain security and handle traffic and any disturbances during the demonstrations.

He predicted, however, that only 2,000 people, mostly students, would demonstrate.

He said the demonstration would be centered around the National Awakening Monument in Cikini, but the police would pay attention to security in other areas, such as the Presidential Palace and the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.

'€œStudents are allowed to express their aspirations, but they must comply with the traffic law. Security personnel will give their utmost service to facilitate students expressing their aspirations,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com. (rms)(++++)
