he ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has urged people to give more time to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to do his job despite the ongoing hardships.
"Please give Pak Jokowi a chance because what he has been dealing with is not easy," PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Hasto, on behalf of the party that nominated Jokowi in the 2014 presidential election, made the call amid increasing criticism of policies introduced by Jokowi that were considered disappointing.
The party made the call a day before a massive rally was planned by various groups, including students, in observance of National Awakening Day. Many elements within society initially planned to rally to demand Jokowi be impeached for his government's poor performance.
"Anyone can stage a rally to express their views of Pak Jokowi's performance. But please don't do it to topple him," said Hasto.
"He has made so much progress in the last seven months. [...] The lack of statesmanship by elites in the legislative institution as well as vested political interests have caused political instability and disrupted Jokowi's focus," he said.(++++)
