he Jakarta Police have deployed up to 8,000 personnel in strategic spots in the city in anticipation of widespread student rallies on Wednesday.
"We also have to maintain security around vital state assets. It will be situational," said National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto over the phone on Wednesday.
He was referring to strategic areas and vital assets, such as the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, the House of Representatives building, the Radio Republic Indonesia building (RRI) and the State Palace.
Thousands of students of the University of Indonesia in Depok, Gadjahmada University in Yogyakarta and Padjadjaran University in Bandung are expected to hit the city's streets to observe National Awakening Day and the 17th anniversary of the Reform Movement. The students plan to raise national issues, such as fluctuating fuel prices and unresolved human rights abuses. (fsu) (++++)
