he police have disclosed that two M-16 assault rifles seized from two Eastern Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) members killed in a police raid on May 24 were believed to have been made in the Philippines and the US.
Central Sulawesi Police chief Brig. Gen. Idham Azis said the words 'made in the USA' and 'made in the Philippines' were etched on the firearms.
'The illegal firearms are believed to have been smuggled from the Philippines through the sea route to Sulawesi,' said Idham.
M-16 rifles, added Idham, are a US-made weapon, but fakes are made in a number of countries, including the Philippines, for illegal activities such as terrorism.
Over the past week, police have arrested seven MIT members in a number of regions in Central Sulawesi.
Two of the seven men were killed in a raid in Poso regency on May 24. Police have also urged other members to surrender.
