Islands in focus: Terrorists use weapons from the Philippines

T

he police have disclosed that two M-16 assault rifles seized from two Eastern Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) members killed in a police raid on May 24 were believed to have been made in the Philippines and the US.

Central Sulawesi Police chief Brig. Gen. Idham Azis said the words '€œmade in the USA'€ and '€œmade in the Philippines'€ were etched on the firearms.

'€œThe illegal firearms are believed to have been smuggled from the Philippines through the sea route to Sulawesi,'€ said Idham.

M-16 rifles, added Idham, are a US-made weapon, but fakes are made in a number of countries, including the Philippines, for illegal activities such as terrorism.

Over the past week, police have arrested seven MIT members in a number of regions in Central Sulawesi.

Two of the seven men were killed in a raid in Poso regency on May 24. Police have also urged other members to surrender.
