he National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) heightened the alert status of Mount Sinabung in Karo regency, North Sumatra, on Wednesday after registering increasing volcanic activity.
The volume of hot lava spewing out of the mountain has reached 3 million cubic meters.
BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Wednesday that with the increasing volcanic activity, the Sinabung had the potential to spew hot lava and ash clouds to the south and southeast as far as 7 kilometers from the crater.
He said the BNPB had called on people living in a number of villages located in a 7 km radius of the mountain's peak to evacuate to safe areas.
'The BNPB is coordinating with the Karo regency administration and relevant authorities to practice caution in line with the mountain's increasing volcanic activity,' he said. (++++)
