he Jakarta Police and the National Police are investigating torture allegations regarding a police investigation of six cleaners who were convicted for child abuse at the Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS).
Four officers with the Jakarta Police, led by Adj. Sr. Comr. Halim, and three officers with the National Police, led by Comr. Adi Suciptana, visited Cipinang detention center in East Jakarta on Thursday to question the cleaners.
'They [cleaners] said they were beaten, had guns pointed to their heads and were dealt out other forms of torture. I hope the truth can be revealed,' lawyer Saut Irianto told reporters at the detention center.
In December last year, Zainal, Syahrial, Agun and Virgiawan Amin were sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor at JIS. Afrischa Setyani, the only woman among the five cleaners, got seven years in jail. Police claimed the other cleaner, Azwar, committed suicide in police custody.
