AKARTA: The Foreign Ministry has said that temporary shelters for Rohingya asylum seekers and Bangladeshis in Aceh and Medan, North Sumatra, would be built in areas separated from residential areas.

'€œThe shelters will be separated from local communities to supervise the refugees who do not have official documents of residence,'€ said the ministry'€™s director of international security, Andy Rachmianto, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Andy said the plan would make it easy for local authorities to monitor the migrants as well as protecting against any diseases being transmitted to locals.

'€œSome of them suffered from diseases,'€ he said.

Andy said, however, that in spite of the condition of the displaced people, locals in Aceh had been enthusiastic in helping them.

Recently, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand agreed to provide temporary shelter to 7,000 asylum seekers, until they could be resettled in a third country by the international community within one year.

Andy said that asylum seekers in Indonesia would be assigned to temporary shelters in North Aceh, East Aceh and Medan.

To build the shelters, Andy said Indonesia would involve two international agencies, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
