n Indonesian PhD candidate has become the first-ever international student to win the Queensland University of Technology's (QUT) Student Leader of the Year award in Brisbane, Australia.
Tri Mulyani 'Yani' Sunaharum, 27, who has been completing her Doctor of Philosophy (Science and Engineering) degree in urban and regional planning, was recognized among QUT's thousands of other students for her outstanding leadership efforts in many campus activities.
'I feel so honored, humbled and excited. I am the first Indonesian student to win the Student Leader of the Year award,' said Yani as quoted on the university's official website www.qut.edu.au, on Friday.
In fact, Yani, who is also a lecturer candidate for the University of Brawijaya in Malang, East Java, where she completed her Bachelor's degree in regional and urban planning, was also the first PhD student to receive the award in the history of QUT, one of Australia's top-10 universities.
Yani, who was also deputy chairman of the QUT Indonesia Students Association and an executive in the Indonesian Students Association in Australia (PPIA), was said to have helped facilitate the visit of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to QUT during the G20 Leader's Summit in Brisbane last year.
'I am especially proud of fostering and maintaining good relations between the young people of Australia and Indonesia,' Yani said.(+++)
