ineteen of 238 undocumented Bangladeshi migrants who landed in North Aceh with Rohingya refugees on May 5 will be repatriated on Thursday, a local immigration official has said.
Lhokseumawe Immigration Office head Akmal said the 19 Bangladeshi migrants would be sent home on a commercial flight.
'They will depart from Lhokseumawe and transit in Medan, North Sumatra. From Medan, the flight will transit again in Malaysia before traveling on to Dhaka, Bangladesh,' said Akmal as quoted by Antara on Sunday.
The immigration officer said the 19 Bangladeshi citizens had obtained complete travel documents and tickets from the Bangladeshi Embassy in Jakarta so that they could be immediately deported.
He said the embassy was checking the remaining stranded migrants to determine whether they were Bangladeshi citizens. Akmal said he could not confirm when the process would be finalized.
'We are waiting for the report from the Bangladeshi Embassy as it is the embassy that directly handles the registration. Once the embassy issues their travel documents, we can deport them,' he said.
For Thursday's deportations, Akmal said, a team from the Lhokseumawe Immigration Office would escort the Bangladeshi migrants to Kuala Namu Airport in Medan. A team from the Bangladeshi Embassy would then accompany them on the flight to Bangladesh. (ebf)(++++)
