Ramadhan religious proselytizing must be anticipated: Setara

S

etara Institute chairman Hendardi has called on the government and public to stay vigilant against inflammatory proselytizing during Ramadhan, with intolerant groups expected to preach against so-called immoral deeds.

'€œUnannounced raids or house-to-house searches and violent acts where people take the law into their own hands, and which are a form of thuggery, will likely occur ahead of and during Ramadhan,'€ Hendardi said as quoted by Antara during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.

He urged police officers and Religious Affairs Ministry officials to take whatever measures necessary to prevent violent acts committed by radical groups in the name of religion.

In the seven months of the Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo '€“ Jusuf Kalla administration, the Setara Institute has recorded 116 violations against freedom of religion and faith and 136 violent acts in the name of religion.

The institute'€™s deputy chairman, Bonar Tigor Naipospos, said there had been no significant progress in the field of religious freedom since the administration took office.

'€œThe public had high hopes of Jokowi-Kalla, but seven months into their leadership, those hopes have not been fulfilled by any progressive breakthroughs,'€ he said. (ebf)(++++)
