he South Sulawesi Police have foiled trade in fake fertilizer in Enrekang regency, seizing 46 tons of fake fertilizer intended for distribution to local farmers.
South Sulawesi Police's special crime and intelligence deputy director Adj. Sr. Comr. Thurman Siregar said on Monday that analysis from the Food and Plants Research Center in Maros regency had found that the fertilizer was fake.
'The lab test showed the components were not in accordance with the label. The contents are substandard and have disadvantaged farmers,' said Thurman.
The fertilizer was seized from two shops in Enrekang last week in bags marked with the names of subsidized fertilizers such as Phounska, Posnkha, SP36 and SP46, all of which are produced in Gresik, East Java. The bags also claimed that the fake fertilizer contained substances found in real fertilizer, such as nitrogen, phosphate, sulfur, calcium and magnesium. Each bag contained 50 kilograms of fertilizer and cost Rp 95,000 (US$7.30).
The ersatz fertilizer, police said, had been on the market since January this year, seemingly linked to the limited supply of subsidized fertilizer.
