Retired Army general and former Jakarta governor Sutiyoso says he is ready to lead the National Intelligence Agency (BIN).
President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has nominated Sutiyoso as the new BIN director to replace Marciano Norman and submitted on Tuesday his name to the House of Representatives for political endorsement.
'I am ready to take the job if the President entrusts me with it,' he said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Sutiyoso said the President had informed him of the nomination on Tuesday and said he had capacity to do the job because of his experience in the intelligence world, particularly when he was stationed in the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus) during his military service.
His appointment to the new job is believed to be connected to his current role as chairman of the Indonesian Unity and Justice Party (PKPI), one of several political parties grouped in the Great Indonesia Coalition that supported Jokowi in the 2014 presidential election.
'Intelligence is my own habitat. I've handled these matters for a long time,' said Sutiyoso, who is also the former commander of the Jakarta Military Command, overseeing the capital and its outskirts.
Separately, House Speaker Setya Novanto said he had received an official letter from the President to inform him of Sutiyoso's nomination.
'We have received official letters from the President, including the nomination of Sutiyoso as BIN chief to replace Pak Marciano,' he said.
He added that another letter from the President informed of the nomination of the Army's Gen. Noermantyo for the post of Indonesian Military (TNI) commander, replacing Gen. Moeldoko, who will reach his mandatory retirement age on Aug. 1.
He said the official letters would be brought to the House's plenary session and would be handed to Commission I on information, defense and foreign affairs to hold a confirmation hearing. (rms)(+++)
