Engeline suspect testimony useful for further prosecution

B

ali Police chief Insp. Gen. Ronny F. Sompie said in Denpasar on Friday that the police would use Agustinus '€œAgus'€ Tai Hamdamai's latest statement to prosecute suspects in the murder of 8-year-old Engeline.

'€œAgus'€™ latest statement [...] can be used as evidence to convince judges in court,'€ Ronny said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Agus has been named a suspect in the murder while Engeline'€™s adoptive mother, Margriet Megawe, has been named a suspect for child neglect. Both are in police detention.

Ronny hailed Agus'€™ latest statement and said it could be used by the police to further develop the investigation into the murder. At the same time, he said, the police would look for further evidence at Margriet'€™s home.

Agus has made statements on three separate occasions. He initially admitted to killing Engeline, and later claimed that Margriet had promised to pay him Rp 2 billion to murder the child.

Engeline was found buried in the garden of Margriet'€™s home on Jl. Sedap Malam in Denpasar on June 10 after she reportedly went missing on May 16.

Agus'€™ lawyer, Haposan Sihombing, said previously that his client had not worked alone, and that Margriet herself had killed Engeline inside the house before asking Agus to bury the victim. (rms)(+++)
