Riau province says it is unable to comply with the central government's request to prepare an islet for 1,000 to 2,000 Rohingya refugees currently in temporary shelters in North Sumatra and Aceh.
'We have no islands with the capacity to accommodate that number. The province's islets are very small,' Riau Border Management Agency head Ramli Wahid said on Friday.
The government, Ramli said, needed an island of 500 hectares to accommodate up to 2,000 refugees, while the largest islets in the province were between 15 and 20 ha.
He had previously allocated the islet of Jemur in Rokan Hilir regency, he said, but a study had found that the islet's rocky terrain made it unsuitable for human habitation.
Ramli stressed, however, that Riau's administration and populace did not wish to reject the Rohingya refugees, but simply had no suitable islet on which to house them.(+++)
