OGYAKARTA: In response to the recent cliff collapse at Sadranan Beach, Gunungkidul regency, Yogyakarta, the local administration said it would immediately map out cliffs in the regency to assess and reduce disaster risk, particularly in resort areas.

Four people were killed, two critically injured and dozens of others suffered slight injuries from falling rocks after a cliff at the beach suddenly collapsed on Wednesday.

'€œWe will conduct a survey and map out cliffs [in the regency] following the tragedy. We will install signs in locations deemed as dangerous,'€ Gunungkidul Cultural and Tourism Agency head Saryanto said on Friday.

Based on a preliminary survey, Gunungkidul is home to many cliffs protruding into the sea.

Saryanto said his office would first focus on mapping cliffs located along Gunungkidul beaches, as most the beaches in the regency offer beautiful natural scenery and were always swarmed by visitors.

'€œDuring weekends, people flock to almost all beaches in the regency. This will make them prone to danger,'€ he said.

Meanwhile, Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Gatot Saptadi supported the idea to establish a map to identify landslide potential in the area.

'€œThe 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta, for example, has created cracks in many cliffs, including those in Gunungkidul,'€ he said.
