akarta Organization of Land Transportation Owners (Organda) chairman Shafruhan Sinungan said Sunday that the organization would ask the police to take action against the drivers and cars of ride-booking app Uber if they continued to operate without a permit.
The Jakarta Police seized five Uber cars and held the drivers for questioning on Friday after the organization filed a police report.
'That case just serves as an example. If they still do that [continue to operate], we will ask the police to take action against them all over again,' Shafruhan told The Jakarta Post over the phone on Sunday.
However, Shafruhan did not blame customers who use the service, but warned them about safety element. 'It is a customer's right to use it. But we don't see it from that angle. ['¦] If something happens to a passenger, where will they report it?' he said, adding that Uber could not guarantee passengers' safety if it was unlicensed.
Organda reported the San Francisco-based company for fraud, information and electronic transaction crimes as well as money laundering.
In an official statement, the organization also stated that Uber violated Law No. 22/2009 on traffic and land transportation, a 2014 government regulation on transportation and a 1991 gubernatorial regulation on taxi operations.
Uber provides a service through a smartphone application that allows users to hire drivers for private rides or to arrange ride shares with other users.
In its service, it uses cars with black license plates instead of having a operational license and logos on its cars. Uber spokesman for South Asia and India Karun Arya has defended the company, saying it is not a taxi company and merely connects a rider to a partner from a licensed transportation company.
