President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is to ban purchases of vessels from abroad in his efforts to boost national shipyard production.
"Indonesian shipyards have the capability to construct various kind of sea craft. I will synchronize our need [of vessels] with the production capability and types of vessels able to be produced by our national shipyards," said Jokowi during a dialog with shipyard business players in Batam on Sunday.
The President said he would instruct all related ministers and executives of state-owned companies no longer to purchase vessels from abroad.
Jokowi said he was surprised to learn that there were 240 shipyard businesses in Indonesia, 104 of which were in Batam, and promised to help boost the industry.
"Our maritime axis [vision] needs support from the maritime industry," he said.
During his visit, Jokowi also inspected the construction of two tankers belonging to state- owned oil and gas company Pertamina at the PT Anggrek Hitam shipyard.(++++)
