undreds of former National Monument (Monas) street vendors wrecked the Lenggang Jakarta food court and souvenir center in Monas, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, to express their anger at the city administration.

The street vendors previously did business in the Monas area. The city administration evicted the vendors and developed Lenggang Jakarta for selected vendors who had permits.

Late on Saturday, the hundreds of street vendors entered the Lenggang Jakarta area and wrecked kiosks and the Lenggang Jakarta office.

Wartakotalive.com
reported that the street vendors turned violent against the dozens of Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) officers who tried to secure the area.

Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama said the city administration had coordinated with the Jakarta Police to secure the area. Ahok said the city'€™s policy on street vendors in Monas was not negotiable.

'€œThere are more street vendors than visitors in Monas, and we have to bring order to the area. We have coordinated with the police to secure Monas,'€ Ahok told reporters after an event to commemorate Jakarta'€™s anniversary at Gondangdia Station, Central Jakarta.
