President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo should follow the example of former president Soeharto in appointing only his trusted aides as ministers, Deputy House of Representatives Speaker Fahri Hamzah said.
'President Jokowi, like Soeharto, must recruit trusted personnel who have extraordinary capability,' Fahri said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Fahri also said that the President needed to give his ministers the freedom to carry out their initiatives. 'Soeharto was able to remain in power for 32 years because he recruited trusted aides and stood behind their decisions,' he said.
Fahri said that ministers under Soeharto such as foreign minister Ali Alatas and secretary Moerdiono were competent.
He said that Jokowi's aides should strive to achieve the competence possessed by Moerdiono. 'Other people might make mistakes but the President must not,' he said.
