T

he coordinator of the Indonesian Democracy Defense Team (TPDI), Petrus Selestinus, has called for public support for National Police detective division (Bareskrim) chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso.

Budi, he said, was one of few police officials committed to upholding law enforcement.

The TPDI coordinator was referring to negative reactions to Bareskrim'€™s decision to name two Judicial Commission (KY) commissioners, Suparman Marzuki and Taufiqurrohman Sauri, suspects for the libel of judge Sarpin Rizaldi.

'€œThe rule of law stands in Indonesia. Everyone must be treated equally before the law. The naming [as suspects] of two KY commissioners and their summons for questioning should neither be taboo nor dismissed as'€˜criminalization'€™,'€ Petrus said as quoted by kompas.com in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

'€œThe public should support the development of a culture in which the police dare to and are willing to summons high-ranking officials,'€ he went on.

'€œFor a long time, law enforcers in Indonesia have been strongly criticized for being unable to take adequate legal measures against high-ranking officials. So why should [Budi] be blamed for investigating a case involving high-ranking officials?'€ he asked.

Petrus said he deplored the attitude of Suparman and Taufiqurrohman and other parties who had denounced the police'€™s move as vindictive.

'€œKY commissioners should have reacted normally to facing a legal process at Bareskrim. They should not make wild accusations, as if KY leaders are first-class citizens who may neither be named suspects nor summoned by the police,'€ said Petrus.

Bareskrim named Suparman and Taufiqurrohman suspects after the pair ruled to impose a six-month suspension against Sarpin. Their recommendation was related to Sarpin'€™s decision to fulfil Budi Gunawan'€™s petrial hearing request to nullify his naming as a graft suspect. (ebf)
