strong>Police warn of rise in hypnosis thefts

July 7, p3

The Jakarta Police have warned of a wave of crimes involving hypnosis in the run-up to the Idul Fitri holiday. '€œAs Idul Fitri approaches, there is a tendency for such crimes to increase,'€ the force'€™s general crimes directorate chief Sr. Comr. Khrisna Murti said recently.

The police recently arrested one of five fraud suspects, identified as AL, for allegedly stealing cash and materials worth Rp 2 billion (US$150,375) from a victim at Pluit Market in Penjaringan, North Jakarta.

Your comments:

There are so many misconceptions regarding hypnosis. This is one major one: No-one can be hypnotized without their agreement and you would not do anything that you wouldn`t do ordinarily. I am a hypnotherapist and believe me, if I could get everyone I met to do what I say, well, I would be a famous hypnotherapist and in the millionaire class, no doubt!

Do not let anyone hold your head down and draw a line along the ground. Thus you will avoid being hypnotized. It is difficult to stop people doing this to you, but you must resist to avoid the hypnosis. Failure to resist may cause your money to disappear, your Internet identity will be stolen and you will be doomed.

There have been many victims of hypnosis. They lost their money. They lost their expensive property and more. Many people claim that you cannot be hypnotized if your mind is not blank.

My question is, what is a blank mind? Does it mean that a blank mind is one that is like a blank plate empty of anything? How can our mind be blank because when we are born we are endowed by God with a brain full of intellectuality including the ability to speak, to communicate, to think, to observe, to perceive, to watch and to be alert (Chomsky, 1957)?

I wonder, given the ease Indonesian subjects seem to be hypnotized, if a state program could be set up, to stem the flow of corruption? Not exactly ethical, I know, but it could be the only way to make headway.

'€˜Tempo'€™ sued for defamation

July 13, p4

The chief editor of the Tempo weekly, Arif Zulkifli, has denied an allegation that the magazine defamed Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Maruli Hendra Utama. Arif said that in its report on the criminalization of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), published on Monday, the magazine had enough evidence to back up its claims.

Your comments:

This should prove interesting. If there are facts and evidence then the defamation case would be just cause to make the evidence (taped conversations) public.

Deddy K.

The criminalization of anticorruption activists and commissioners has echoes of the 1980s and 1990s, when Indonesia was oppressed by the Soeharto regime. President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo is a disgraceful failure of a president, who has only emboldened pro-corruption forces in the establishment.

'€˜Pacman'€™ meets tearful Veloso in prison

July 11, p3

Superstar Filipino boxer Manny '€œPacman'€ Pacquiao fulfilled on Friday his promise to meet death row inmate Mary Jane Veloso in a Yogyakarta prison. During the visit he reiterated his plea to the Indonesian government to spare the life of his compatriot. Pacquiao was accompanied by his wife Jinkee Jamora and Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Maria Lumen B. Isleta in his morning visit to the Wirogunan Penitentiary, where Veloso has been detained since late April after the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) decided to postpone her execution.

Your comments:

I don'€™t see why she is still on death row. Releasing a victim of human trafficking will play well with the average Indonesian, especially with a slum-girl narrative to stir the sympathies beyond the fear of drugs. This should be win-win, but as usual the national ego makes simple things difficult. Serge (Atlaoui) is a victim of perception '€” not to mention racism '€” but MJ'€™s case should be clear cut.

L. Millar

Let'€™s see if the Philippines'€™ soft non-judgmental approach will lead to Veloso'€™s release.

Reduce the sentence, that'€™s what the Philippines and activists have been asking until now. Plus, she'€™s probably a victim of human trafficking. That'€™ll put you in a bad spotlight, Jokowi, if you decide to shoot her.

'€˜Jokowi needs to follow Soeharto'€™

July 9, p4

President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo should follow the example of former president Soeharto in appointing only his trusted aides as ministers, Deputy House of Representatives Speaker Fahri Hamzah said.
'€œPresident Jokowi, like Soeharto, must recruit trusted personnel who have extraordinary capability,'€ Fahri said as quoted by Antara news agency. Fahri also said that the President needed to give his ministers the freedom to carry out their initiatives. '€œSoeharto was able to remain in power for 32 years because he recruited trusted aides and stood behind their decisions,'€ he said.

Your comments:

Fahri said '€œPresident Jokowi, like Soeharto, must recruit trusted personnel who have extraordinary capability.'€ Perhaps the problem is that most of the people Jokowi trusts do not have extraordinary capability, and, the people who have extraordinary capability are not trusted by Jokowi?

Terry McAsee

It'€™s funny none of the posters find it amusing that a PKS member would be praising Soeharto. If Soeharto was in power, this fellow would most likely be in jail. Everyone in Indonesia seems to have such short memories.

Weilim

Don'€™t forget though that he'€™s not talking about '€œbringing back'€ Soeharto. He'€™s talking about bringing people who have the same characters as those of Soeharto'€™s ministers. Those are two very different things.
