he family of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo is not planning to hold an 'open house' event at its private residence on Jl. Kutai Utara, Sumber, Banjarsari, Surakarta, during the Idul Fitri celebration, which falls on Friday, a family member has said.
Jokowi's mother, Sudjiatmi Notomihardjo, said that the family would nonetheless welcome any Surakarta residents who wished to come to strengthen their good relationship.
'There will be no 'open house' event; however, we will still welcome any residents who wish to come to our house. We will be still open for such visits,' Sudjiatmi said on the sidelines of a bazaar held by the Artha Graha Peduli Foundation in Surakarta on Tuesday.
Sudjiatmi said she would not celebrate Idul Fitri with her son, Jokowi, who is reported to be set to spend the holiday in Banda Aceh, saying she would stay in Surakarta as many guests would come to celebrate Idul Fitri at her house.
'I will not go to Jakarta. There will be many guests at my house during Idul Fitri. Moreover, Jokowi will not celebrate Idul Fitri in Java. He's unlikely to come home until after Idul Fitri,' said Sudjiatmi, accompanied by her daughter, Titik Ritawati.
Hundreds of residents packed the bazaar Sudjiatmi held with support from the Artha Graha Peduli Foundation at state elementary school SD Negeri 3 Sumber, around 300 meters from Jokowi's private residence. They took the opportunity to buy staple food commodities at cheaper prices. Sudjiatmi attended the event accompanied by Jokowi's younger sisters, Titik and Idayati.
Sudjiatmi opened the bazaar by symbolically handing over a package of staple food commodities to a local resident. Two Jokowi's younger sisters directly served several local residents.
Sudjiatmi said it was hoped that the bazaar could be held routinely before the Idul Fitri celebration in the coming years.
'It can help people from low income brackets. I'm really happy and hope similar bazaars can be held every year,' she said.
At the bazaar, each food package, which comprised 2 kilograms (kg) of rice, 1 kg of sugar, 1 liter of cooking oil and 3 packages of instant noodles, was sold for Rp 50,000 (US$3.75). (ebf)
