The seasonal exodus is just for the poor; the rich can meet their parents any time through the year even though their parents live outside the country.
The poor have to spend the whole year working to make ends meet for those left in their old hometown.
Although it looks the same, it's still their green grass of home and the lanes they walked with their loved ones and there the old trees are still standing where they used to play, amid the economic slowdown.

Major festivals such as Idul Fitri are an occasion to reconnect with family and friends.
It is an international phenomena, e.g. during Diwali in India the situation is similar.
Economic downturn only dampens this meet and greet a bit.
However, to save money people take not-so-safe means of travel ' an entire family on a motorbike.
This is not going to change in a hurry, until other mid-size cities and towns have enough employment opportunities which give people the option to work where they belong.
