Your letters: Indonesia soon to be dry

ave you watched the Lawless movie? It features top Hollywood movie stars Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke and Guy Pearce. The breathtaking movie depicts the three infamous Bondurant brothers who lived in Prohibition in the US.

They sold moonshine for a living, from producing it, distributing and selling it illegally, to bribing officers and murdering people like it was not a big deal. I didn'€™t enjoy watching such a brutal movie. But this movie is based on a true story! It really did happen in the US between 1920 and 1933, when it became a dry country.

I just cannot imagine that there was a time in the US where crimes were so fierce, with the bootleggers paying officers to keep their businesses running smoothly.

So, I researched this so-called Prohibition in the US on the Internet and in some books, and the results were unbelievable. There was a bootlegger called George Cassiday who said that he supplied moonshine to 80 percent of the congressmen and senators in the US, some of whom even had private cellars! In the end, it all just comes back to power and money.

Our beloved country is about to do the same thing as the US. The legislature is trying to enact a bill that prohibits all alcohol-related activities, from producing, storing, distributing, selling and even consuming alcoholic drinks. Well, congratulations to you who love to drink alcohol!

It'€™s noble that the House of Representatives is trying to enact this bill for the sake of our younger generations'€™ future, like there is nothing else they can do to protect them. Yes, it is true that many people die from drinking licensed alcoholic drinks. Oh, I'€™m sorry, they died because they drank adulterated liquor, which is sold at much cheaper prices than the legal products.

It is true that many people commit crimes because they are drunk, but do you know how many people commit crimes because it is the easiest way to get money? What I want to say here is that you cannot see a problem just from one angle. Life is more than that and more importantly, you cannot force someone not to do something they want to.

We already have regulations related to alcoholic beverages, namely no advertising activities are allowed on television and recently the government banned the selling of Class A alcoholic beverages at minimarts and convenience stores. People under the age of 21 are prohibited from purchasing or consuming alcohol.

Will no chaos occur like that in the US? If you don'€™t like to drink alcohol, then don'€™t drink it. It'€™s good for you to comply with your beliefs but stop trying to make new regulations and impose your beliefs.
