SEAN and China have again asserted their commitment to maintaining security and stability in the South China Sea by pushing forward a wide array of cooperative agreements and accelerating the settlement of a code of conduct to tackle South China Sea territorial disputes.

'€œWe have agreed to maintain stability in South China Sea by, among others things, implementing several points achieved as a result of this meeting,'€ Thailand deputy foreign minister Noppadon Theppitak said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Accompanied by Chinese deputy foreign minister Liu Zhenmin, Theppitak explained the results of the ninth meeting of ASEAN and China senior ministers on the implementation of the '€œDeclaration on the Conduct of Parties (DoC)'€ agreement on Wednesday evening.

Theppitak said that in the one-day meeting, the two parties agreed on the implementation of DoC points for the period of 2015-2016. They also agreed that ASEAN and China would be more engaged in discussing the acceleration of the DoC South China Sea agreement settlement.

He said that the ASEAN and China strategic partnership was a main pillar in maintaining peace and security in the region.

The minister further said ASEAN and China had agreed on the need to accelerate the settlement of DoC agreements to muffle conflicts in the South China Sea, an area which measured around 3.5 million square kilometers and stretched from Singapore to the Taiwan Strait.

'€œWe have even arranged '€˜second commonalities'€™ so that the settlement of DoC agreement discussions can be immediately conducted. Consultations and meetings on DoC will continue to be held for the sake of stability in the region, especially regarding the South China Sea,'€ said Theppitak.

Meanwhile, Zhenmin said that the Chinese government was still committed to maintaining peace and security in various regions, including in South China Sea.

'€œVarious cooperative projects, such as maritime and sea-rescue operation cooperation, are positive things that we can jointly work on to maintain peace and security in the region,'€ he said. (ebf)(++++)
