senior cleric with the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) has denied that the council declared the national health insurance (JKN) program haram.
The deputy chairman of the MUI's sharia council, Jaih Mubarok, said that the council had not labelled the health insurance program haram, but had merely said it was inconsistent with sharia.
'We didn't say that it was haram. The public misunderstood our statement,' Jaih said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The MUI issued the edict during an open meeting in Tegal, Central Java, recently, saying that the way the program was run by the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) involved elements that contravened Islamic law, such as maisir (gambling) and riba (interest), both of which are forbidden by Islamic teaching.
