ealth Minister Nila Djuwita Anfasa Moeloek has said that the Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) will keep running despite a recent fatwa (edict) from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) that said the agency's JKN health insurance program was haram (unlawful according to Islamic law).
Nila said that people needed health insurance to protect themselves, especially low-income families.
'People need health care. Until now [the program] has not been not disrupted,' she said on Saturday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Nila said the government would soon meet the MUI to get feedback, but she insisted that the program would be maintained.
The MUI has stated that the current implementation of the JKN program, which is managed by BPJS Kesehatan, is not in accordance with Islamic laws.
'This program contains elements of speculation, gambling and usury,' the MUI said in a document published on its website.
