iking trails on Mount Semeru in East Java were temporarily closed on Thursday during search and rescue efforts to find a missing climber.

According to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) manager Ayu Dewi Utari, 31-year-old Daniel Saroha from Cileubut Barat village in Bogor was reported missing on Tuesday after setting out to climb the 3,676 meter tall mountain.

"While the officers were searching for Daniel, they found the body of another climber, Dania, 19, from Sukabumi, who had died after being struck by a boulder falling from the mountain's peak," said Ayu to thejakartapost.com on Thursday.

Ayu added that aside from closing the hiking trails, they had also asked climbers already on the mountain to move down to the Ranupani Post.

To climp Mt. Semeru, Ayu said that all climbers must provide a doctor's reference letter, carry sufficient equipment, obey the rules, refrain from making a campfire and use only the main Ranupani route.

Earlier this year, Mt. Semeru was closed on Jan. 5 due to bad weather and reopened on April 22.

According to the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) in Bandung, West Java, the mountain's activity is still at level II (alert). (kes) (++++)
