Indonesia, the host of the 2018 ASEAN Games, plans to award winners at the multi-sport event with a medal adorned with akik (gemstones).
'Akik from Indonesia are among the best. I will make akik one of the materials for the ASEAN Games medals,' Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi said, as quoted by tempo.co on Thursday.
Imam believed that the decision would help to promote Indonesia's natural resources.
This is not the first time akik have been used as souvenirs for a prominent event. During the 60th commemoration of the Asia-Africa Conference (KAA) in Jakarta and Bandung earlier this year, akik was chosen by the Tourism Ministry as one of ten souvenirs given to guests.
House of Representatives deputy speaker Fadli Zon also gave akik as a souvenir to heavyweight boxer Manny Pacquiao during their meeting in Jakarta.
The gemstones have become a national sensation due to their popularity as collectors' items among grownups. (rad/ika)(+++)
