he University of Indonesia (UI) has been ranked 79th in a survey conducted by education rating institution Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), making it among the 100 best universities in Asia, a university official has said.

UI head of public relations and public information openness Rifelly Dewi Astuti said on Monday that UI was the only university in Indonesia to make it on the list of 100 best universities in Asia.

'€œWorldwide, UI ranks the 310st best university in the world and is the only Indonesian university with such a high position,'€ said Felly as quoted by Antara in Jakarta.

She said the university'€™s ranking in Asia and worldwide was based on an assessment of more than 800 universities by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) for 2014/2015.

Based on QS World University Ranking by subject, UI also won a predicate as a university with the best school of medicine in Indonesia and ranked 301st best in the world. In terms of schools, UI ranked 200th with the best schools of social sciences and management.

Felly said the university'€™s achievement could not be separated from the improvements it had made, such as a 200 percent increase in the number of journals it had published and improved human resources and organizational management.

The QS World University Rankings evaluated six parameters in its scoring system. Academic reputation accounts for 40 percent of the whole score, followed by employer reputation 10 percent and faculty-to-student ratio 20 percent. The number of citations per faculty accounts for 20 percent of the score, followed by the proportion of international students (5 percent) and international staffers (5 percent).

The United States'€™ Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranks highest worldwide in QS World University Rankings, while the National University of Singapore is the best university in Asia. (rad/ebf)
