Indonesia's population is expected to reach 366.5 million by 2050, which according to recent data from Population Reference Bureau (PRB), would see it become the world's fifth most populous country.
The data predicts that Indonesia's population will grow by 43 percent in the next 35 years, driven by, among other things, low infant mortality and a high fertility rate.
The data states that Indonesia's current population stands at 255.7 million, making it currently the fourth biggest in the world.
By 2050, according to the data, Indonesia will be replaced as the world's fourth most populous nation by Nigeria, as African countries are predicted to experience a baby boom.
Washington-based PRB states that Nigeria and other African countries will have the highest fertility rates in the world within the coming 35 years.
PRB also predicts that India will overtake China as the world's most populous nation by 2050. India's population will grow to 1.7 billion by 2050 from 1.3 billion people in 2015. Meanwhile, China's population is predicted to remain stagnant at 1.4 billion.
Overall, the world's population will increase to 9.8 billion in 2050 from 7.3 billion in 2015, or a 34 percent rise, PRB states. (ika)(++++)
