ALIKPAPAN: Two independent mayoral candidate pairs who wanted to contest the Balikpapan mayoral balloting have failed to meet requirements allowing them to run in the simultaneous regional leadership elections on Dec. 9.
After being verified by the Balikpapan General Elections Commission (KPUD), the pair of Achdiannoor and Abriantinus only obtained 33,248 valid supporters instead of the minimum 87,000, while the Abdul Hakim-Wahidah pair only obtained 21,563 of the minimum 79,000.
'Therefore, both candidate pairs failed to meet the requirements needed to run in the Balikpapan mayoral election on Dec. 9,' said Balikpapan KPUD head Noor Thoha on Friday.
Despite that, Noor said the eligibility of the two candidate pairs' candidacies would ultimately be determined in a closed-door plenary session at the KPUS office on Saturday.
