President Joko âJokowiâ Widodo said on Sunday that the rebuilding of old markets in areas across Indonesia should be based more on the concept of traditional markets
resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said on Sunday that the rebuilding of old markets in areas across Indonesia should be based more on the concept of traditional markets.
The President made the statement when he visited the Tengah Market on Jl. Tanjungpura, Pontianak, West Kalimantan, which caught fire on Friday evening. Accompanied by a number of local officials, Jokowi observed ruins of shop houses and kiosks destroyed by the fire.
'This is an old market; this should be rebuilt based on the concept of a traditional market,' said the President, who was in Pontianak from Friday evening until Sunday for a work visit and to inaugurate the 2015 Khatulistiwa Carnival.
Jokowi promised that he would help rebuild the Tengah Market, which was built in the 1930s, with greater involvement from all stakeholders.
'All parties will play their roles. The central government will help local administrations. Do not do it halfway. This rebuilding process must be started immediately,' he said as quoted by Antara.
The President further said the government would calculate costs needed to rebuild the entire infrastructure of the Tengah Market, and not only the burned down shop houses and kiosks. So, the overall market would be arranged well.
He said all vendors and other market users must pay close attention to risks of short circuits that had become a major cause of market fires in areas across the country.
'This market has a history. The Tengah market is the first traditional market in Pontianak; thus, we have to consider this aspect [in the rebuilding process],' said Jokowi. (ebf)
