The director of special economic crimes at the National Police'€™s Criminal Investigation Directorate (Bareskrim), Brig. Gen. Victor Edison Simanjuntak, said one of the candidates being considered for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) was connected with an alleged criminal case involving corruption.

'€œInvestigators have said the case involves corruption,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Sunday.

Victor said the police were planning to disclose both the identity and the case details of the KPK commissioner candidate in a press conference on Monday.

He refused to comment about news reports that mention the initials of the antigraft body leader candidate Bareskrim had named as a suspect.

'€œI'€™m not responsible for what has circulated in the media,'€ said Victor.

However, he did explain the candidate had once served in a strategic position in a state institution. '€œHe is a former official,'€ said Victor.

The criminal investigation official said the police had investigated the corruption case allegedly involving the KPK leader candidate over the last several months. He added the investigation was conducted based on reports submitted directly to investigators at his directorate. He refused to reveal the identities of parties who had filed the police reports.

On Friday, a KPK leadership selection committee member, Yenti Ganarsih, said the committee had obtained an overall picture about the corruption case allegedly involving one of the KPK leader candidates.

She said that the committee did not consider the police'€™s decision to name one of the KPK candidates a graft suspect as an obstacle in its work.

The committee had instead been grateful that the candidate'€™s naming as a graft suspect happened before it handed over the candidate'€™s name to President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, she added.

Yenti said the committee considered the police'€™s decision as an early anticipative measure to prevent people with legal problems from entering the KPK.

'€œI want to say: Alhamdulillah [Thanks God]. I hope the Bareskrim chief [Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso] can immediately summon and start the process of bringing [the graft suspect to] justice,'€ she said. (ebf)
