National Police Criminal Investigation Corps (Bareskrim) director of special economic crimes Brig. Gen. Victor E. Simanjuntak has asserted that the recent naming of a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leader candidate as a graft suspect was not politically motivated.

'€œThere are no political interests. This is truly based on the results of our investigation. This is based on fact; we have the evidence,'€ said Victor as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Sunday.

He said any suspicion that Bareskrim had named the KPK leader candidate a graft suspect simply because it did not like the candidate was baseless.

He said law enforcement should not always be connected with politics.

'€œI don'€™t want to get involved in polemics. I want to discuss facts and evidence only. If we didn'€™t have facts and evidence, why would we dare to investigate the case?'€ said Victor.

Earlier, Bareskrim said the police had declared a KPK commissioner candidate a graft suspect. The police have yet to reveal the identity and case details of the candidate.

Victor said the KPK leader candidate the police had named a suspect was a former state official. He said the police would announce the candidate'€™s identity and case details on Monday.

Victor said the police had investigated the graft implicating the KPK leader candidate over the past several months. The investigation was conducted based on reports filed with Bareskrim investigators. He refused to disclose the identities of those who submitted the police report. (ebf)
