Graft suspect OC Kaligis says he is ready to face trial

raft suspect Otto Cornelis (OC) Kaligis said he was ready to face his first trial on Monday, during which prosecutors would read their charges against the senior lawyer over an alleged bribery case involving judges and the clerk of the State Administrative Court (PTUN) in Medan, North Sumatra.

'€œI don'€™t have any intention to obscure the trial. It was reported in a newspaper that I would do something to hamper the trial. This has gone too far. How could you say that I want to create obstacles for the trial? Please don'€™t slander a sick man,'€ said Kaligis as quoted by Antara, after he arrived at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday.

Kaligis'€™ trial has been delayed twice. It was first delayed because he refused to attend the trial on Aug. 20, saying that he was ill. A follow up session scheduled for last Thursday was also postponed. Kaligis claimed that he wanted to check on his health with his family physician, Dr Terawan. He also claimed that he had not yet appointed his lawyer.

'€œI almost died on that day. My blood pressure was 212/100. I discussed my health problems with the prosecutors. I almost got brain damage then. Fortunately, Dr Terawan straightaway gave me medical treatment,'€ said Kaligis. He refused to comment about his charges.

On Friday, Kaligis underwent surgery to clean up clogged blood vessels in his brain at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Jakarta. (ebf)
