Thousands of workers are slated to stage a long march from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle to the State Palace on Sept
housands of workers are slated to stage a long march from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle to the State Palace on Sept. 1 to demand that the government fix the country's worsening economic condition, which they fear will result in layoffs.
Since the beginning of this year, the rupiah has continued to face depreciation against the dollar, which surpassed Rp 14,000 only last week, most likely affecting local businesses with high import content.
'On Sept. 1, workers will stage protests simultaneously in 20 provinces. In Jakarta we plan on staging a long march from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle to the State Palace,' chairman of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) Said Iqbal said as quoted by kompas.com on Saturday.
He said that they did not intentionally choose a weekday to stage the protest in order to disrupt the activities of Jakartans.
'That will be a peaceful demonstration. We do not intend to disrupt people's activities,' he said.
'We will demand that the government lower the prices of fuel and goods, not lay off workers, ban foreign workers, improve health insurance and uphold work safety regulations,' he added.
Said and representatives of seven workers unions visited the Jakarta Police headquarters to coordinate with the police regarding the plan.
