Traders still displayed their animals on the sidewalks of Jl. KH Mas Mansyur in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, even after Monday'€™s deployment of about 500 City Public Order Agency officers to expel them from public spaces.

The operation failed after hundreds of traders armed with rocks prevented the public order officers from entering the area on Monday. There was no physical clash after officials from Tanah Abang district called on the public order officers to delay the raids.

On Tuesday, however, the traders were doing business on the sidewalks again, ignoring the gubernatorial ban on doing so. The ban was aimed at maintaining public order.

The ban, which was added to the city bylaw on public order, prohibits any kind of business in public places such as sidewalks and parks.

Hundreds of goats and sheep as well as dozens of cows were on display on Jl. Mas Mansyur as shoppers selected animals to sacrifice on Idul Adha (Islamic day of sacrifice) on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat called on the traders to abide by regulations. He said that the city administration had prepared a number of places to facilitate the animal traders running of their businesses.

'€œDon'€™t trade in public places like sidewalks. ['€¦] We do not prohibit them from doing their businesses, but [ask that they do it in] places that we have prepared. Don'€™t impinge on the rights of other people,'€ Djarot said. (bbn)(++++)
