Vice President Jusuf Kalla praised the idea of involving civil society in the implementation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) that were adopted by world leaders during the 2015 Sustainable Development Summit at United Nations headquarters in New York, the US, on Friday.
"Goal 17 mandates a partnership with civil society organizations. We don't need to become suspicious of each other," he said on Friday local time, or Saturday in Jakarta.
Kalla was speaking at his meeting with representatives of Indonesian civil society organizations (CSOs), which had also attended the UN meeting from Sept.25 to Sept.27. Foreign Minister Retno L.P.Marsudi accompanied the Vice President in the meeting, which ran for around an hour at the office of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN, New York.
Kalla said it was impossible to implement SDGs without active participation by all civil society organizations due to the limited budget of the government. "Both government and CSOs need to think about forms of partnerships they can work on," he said in the meeting.
Several CSO leaders, such as International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID) director Sugeng Bahagijo, Indonesian Women Coalition for Justice and Democracy (KPI) secretary general Dian Kartika Sari, Migrant Care policy analyst Wahyu Susilo, Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) coordinator Haris Azhar, Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) executive director Abetnego Tarigan and Darmawan of Oxfam Indonesia, attended the meeting.
Sugeng said implementing the UN program, which contained 17 goals and 169 targets, would accelerate the government's progress in achieving its development programs, which had been stated on the National Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJM).
Unlike the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2000-2015, he said the SDGs, which were aimed at tackling the world's biggest problems, starting from eradicating poverty to reducing inequality, required national governments to be more inclusive by ensuring greater involvement by civil CSOs. (ebf)
