Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama is set to fine the operators of Surya Paloh's island in Thousand Islands regency for carrying out illegal construction work, including reclaiming land.

Ahok said that the Jakarta administration had also sealed off Kali Age Island, owned by Nasdem politician and media mogul.

"They don't have a building permit (IMB) to build on the island so we are going to fine them," he said at City Hall on Thursday as reported by tempo.co.

The company that runs the island also built two helipads without IMBs, the construction which is said to have damaged reefs near the island.

Ahok has promised to better supervise the Thousand Islands to make sure that all construction work is done with proper permits.

"The government never receives transfer-of-land-rights (BPHTB) taxes from people selling islands there," he said, adding that the city administration would set property taxes (PBB) in the regency to equal the highest in Jakarta.

Thousand Islands regency has seen increased tourism in recent years. Comprising around 100 islands sprawling off the shore of North Jakarta, the area offers alternative recreation for Jakarta residents. Ahok said in April that more than half of the islands are owned by private companies or individuals. (rin)(+)
