Indonesia's highest legislative body delivered a lecture to students on Thursday in Southeast Sulawesi about the Youth Pledge in an attempt to encouraged young people to love their nation, even in the face of radicalism.

The People'€™s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Mahyuddin spoke about the the MPR'€™s four pillars before students at a senior high school and Haluoleo University in Southeast Sulawesi'€™s capital Kendari.

The four pillars of the MPR are: the Pancasila (Indonesia'€™s five-point ideology), the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945), the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) and the state motto Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity).

'€œThe preamble of UUD 1945 states that we have to respect every culture and religion,'€ Mahyuddin said.

On Oct. 28, 1928, the Youth Pledge was made at the Second Youth Congress and Indonesia Raya was sung for the first time. The pledge, which proclaimed the unity of homeland, nation and language, laid the foundation for a unified Indonesia, and guided the country through its tumultuous founding years. (dan)
