Zulkifli Hasan.

People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker Zulkifli Hasan says that rich countries do not always bring welfare to their people, especially when enduring ongoing conflict.

At the opening of the 16th '€œMalay World Islamic World'€ (DMDI) Convention in Hotel Borobudur on Tuesday evening, Zulkifli said that countries in the Middle East were rich in natural resources such as oil.

'€œHowever,'€ he continued, '€œwealth does not mean a peaceful life for the people there."

It is a different situation in Indonesia, Zulkifli said. Being the majority, Indonesian Muslims really respect diversity in their society, be it religious or ethnic.

"Muslims in Indonesia can live peacefully in democracy. There is no fighting and everything is harmonious," said the politician of National Mandate Party.

He urged all members of the DMDI to follow Indonesian Muslims in maintaining peace because without unity, it would be a challenge for Muslims to catch up with the most developed nations.

The convention was held from Oct. 24 to 29 in Jakarta, along with the ASEAN Mosque Youth Gymboree. (rin)(+)
