Depok is being overwhelmed by the rising numbers of foreign immigrants, according to the city's immigration office, which has recorded that as of Nov. 19, there were 248 illegal foreign immigrants living in the city, with many suspected of involvement in crime.
'There are some who have been arrested as drug dealers and others arrested for spreading false religions,' Depok Immigration Agency head Dudi Iskandar said on Friday.
Dudi said he had requested the cooperation of neighborhood administrations to closely monitor the activities of illegal immigrants.
He revealed that 135 people were illegally living in Beji district, with a further 175 in Pancoran Mas district, an area popular with foreigners, according to Dudi, because of its central location and low property prices.
A number of citizens of Iran and Nigeria had been identified as drug dealers during a raid earlier this year, he added.
Thirty-seven illegal immigrants had been deported, he said, while more were currently being held at a detention center for illegal immigrants in Jakarta.
'The supervision of foreigners need to be tightened; they could otherwise potentially have negative ramifications on society,' Dudi said. (liz/bbn)
